Part of the senior management team and reporting directly to the Board of Directors, Dane keeps the business rolling at the Auckland end. He oversees commercial scaffolding sales, scopes larger projects and mentors the operations and sales teams.
Having been with Camelspace for nine years, for Dane it’s the variety of work that keeps it interesting. He likes the technical side that major projects bring and enjoys getting deep into the detail – evidenced by the feet-deep files he keeps behind his desk. One of his most memorable was a large public access job, 31 floors up, which required the gear to be lifted by helicopter. He brought in a project manager from the South Island and a structural steel engineer to help scope the project, which holds the record for the greatest number of heli lifts ever in the Auckland CBD.
The global financial crisis struck in Dane’s early days with Camelspace. Contrary to many, the business continued to hire scaffolders throughout, growing the team from two to 20 by the end of it. It was Dane’s job to develop enough business to keep everyone employed and maintain a lean operating model to keep costs down all the while maintaining the company’s reputation for quality and service.
He originally started working in sales when he was just 20. He was an estimator for an engineering products company in London during his OE. On his return home, he joined Fletcher Easy Steel selling scaffold fittings before moving to another supplier selling scaffold systems.
Outside of work, Dane’s main preoccupation is a boat he and his brother are building from scratch. They’ve been working on it for over four years, eventually shifting it off the front lawn, much to his wife’s relief.
